The story takes plenty of insane turns, but compared to other Metal Gear Solid games, there are fewer plodding, lengthy cut-scenes. Even Snake’s favorite stealth tool, the cardboard box, is here. You accomplish this by using a mix of stealth and action across multiple locales. The Phantom Pain follows the tale of the Kiefer Sutherland-voiced mercenary Snake (aka Punished Snake, aka Venom Snake, aka Big Boss - told you it was convoluted) as he and his comrades in the private military organization Diamond Dogs seek vengeance against the shadowy government organization Cypher. If you’ve never played one of these games, you’ll want to spend a few hours perusing Wikipedia to catch up on the series’ incredibly convoluted backstory.
In true Metal Gear fashion, The Phantom Pain is equal parts stealth gameplay, political intrigue, and ham-fisted drama.

Kojima has made similar claims following the release of previous Metal Gear games, but considering the epic falling out between the legendary designer and series publisher Konami, he might be right.Īnd that’s just fine, because out of the many excellent games in the Metal Gear series, The Phantom Pain is perhaps the finest. The Phantom Pain is the latest and, according to series creator Hideo Kojima, the last in the long-running Metal Gear Solid franchise. This is Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain in all its wonderfully over-the-top glory. In that time, I’ve cultivated herbs, stolen a Russian transport truck, shot a half-dozen soldiers with tranquilizer darts, ridden a horse, fired an antiaircraft gun, and stuffed an unconscious man into a porta-potty.
#METAL GEAR SOLID V THE PHANTOM PAIN WEAPONS UPDATE#
While the Metal Gear Solid V update will arrive on time for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 3 platforms, it has been slightly delayed for Xbox 360 owners.Roughly 15 minutes have passed since I touched down near a remote Soviet outpost in the wilds of Afghanistan. Other changes in the update include the addition of nameplates, new emblems, different colours and camo for your bases, and a fourth FOB for you to be able to customize. Konami do mention to accept the rewards when you have completed them, as you won’t gain the rewards automatically. New challenge tasks and additional rewards for them can give you more ideas of what to do in the game. A new mission event has also been added, in which a private FOB has been taken over by a unit that sides with Skull Face. Linked to this is the newly added Security Challenges, which you can attack FOBs where the owner has enabled the challenge, and you can let them challenge yours. The latter teleports you back to where it is placed, useful if you need to get out of a tricky situation.Īdditions have also been made to FOBs in the game, including being able to place your own cameras and mines.
The three Grade 9 weapons that have been added to the game include the non-lethal AM A114 Riot Pistol, the powerful Molotok-68 Anti-Materiel Sniper Rifle, and a Wormhole Generator. Another added costume turns Snake into Cyborg Ninja, which gives you similar effects. The Raiden costume gives Snake a larger jump distance as well as faster sprinting speed. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain has had a major update today, and adds a number of new features including a Raiden costume for Snake in FOBs.
